India’s private weather forecaster, Skymet Weather, has predicted “below normal” rainfall during the June to September monsoon season due to a strengthening El Nino. The country’s agricultural sector, which accounts for 40% of production and employs 47% of the population, is highly dependent on rain-fed areas. Skymet’s forecast factors in a progressive decline in rainfall over the season, with central and northwest India expected to report the highest rainfall deficiency.
