The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched the first second-generation navigation satellite series, NavIC, designed as India's answer to the Global Positioning System. NavIC is currently a regional navigation satellite system consisting of eight satellites and ground stations operating 24/7, providing better positioning accuracy of nearly 10 metres throughout the Indian landmass compared to the GPS's accuracy of 20 metres. The Indian government has plans to develop NavIC into a global satellite navigation system to compete with the US's GPS, Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo and China's BeiDou in the coming years.
